Kyle Coats is in his fourth season on the HSU football staff and he serves as the special teams coordinator and secondary coach.
In 2015, the Cowboys had one of the best special teams units in the country. Jessie Ramos was first-team All-American as a kick returner and Nico Francino was a first-team All-American as a punter.
The secondary also had a solid year. James Place was named first-team all-ASC at safety and Conlan Aguirre was second-team all-ASC at cornerback.
In 2014, safeties James Place and Keaton Trinkle were each named second-team all-ASC. Punter Nico Francino was a second-team all-American and first-team all-ASC and Jessie Ramos was an all-ASC kick returner.
He led a secondary that improved as the season went along and ended the year starting a pair of freshmen cornerbacks. Kick returner Jessie Ramos was named an all-American after averaging 26.7 yards per return and had three touchdowns.
He spent one season at his alma mater Trinity as a full-time assistant. He coached outside linebackers and special teams for the Tigers.
Prior to his one year at Trinity, he was a graduate assistant at Hardin-Simmons for the 2010 and 2011 seasons where he helped with the strong safeties. He also helped with scout teams for defense and special teams and helped coordinate the weight room.
Coats was a three-year lettermen and two-time academic all-American as a player at Trinity. He was a two-time second-team all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference selection as a linebacker.
Coats is a native of Georgetown, Texas. He has a bachelor of science in Marketing and a minor in physical education from Trinity. He also has a master’s of science in Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation Management from Hardin-Simmons. He had a 4.0 GPA in graduate school and a 3.7 GPA as an undergraduate.
