ALPINE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' ninth-ranked football team rolled to a 64-0 win over Sul Ross State on Saturday night at Jackson Field in Alpine.
It didn't take the Cowboys long to get on the scoreboard. Brennen Wooten, making his Cowboy debut at quarterback, hit Kevi Evans for a 65-yard touchdown pass over the middle. Cameron Hanna forced a fumble on the next drive for the Cowboys and Wooten ran it in from four yards out and 3:50 into the game the HSU led 13-0.
Jamie Pogue hit the first of three field goals for him on the night to make it 22-0 with 6:04 to play in the first quarter.
Bryson Hammonds scored on a 9-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter and Evans scored on 35 and 43 touchdown passes from Wooten. HSU led 40-0 at halftime.
After a quick three and out by the defense, Hammonds took the first play from scrimmage of the second half 50 yards to the end zone for a score. Pogue added a 20-yard field goal and Jaquan Hemphill added a 11-yard touchdown run to make the score 57-0 after three quarters.
Peyton Killam added a 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to make it 64-0.
It was the first shutout since a 28-0 win over McMurry in 2017. The Cowboys' defense was dominant throughout the night and held the Lobos to 96 yards and 24 yards of total offense. Matt Girard led the defense with eight tackles. HSU limited the Lobos to five first downs.
HSU had 648 yards of total offense in the game. Wooten was 10-for-15 for 217 yards and three touchdowns and added another on the ground. The Cowboys did not have to punt in the game.
Hemphill had 148 yards and a touchdown and Hammonds added 107 yards and two touchdowns. HSU had 386 yards rushing in the game.
The Cowboys are now 1-0 on the year and will have its home opener next Saturday at 6 p.m. against Trinity.
