GEORGETOWN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team moved to 7-1 with a 49-35 win at Southwestern in American Southwest Conference action on Saturday at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.
The Cowboys received the opening kick and drove 65 yards in four plays to take the early. Ty Hooper hit Reese Childress on a perfect ball over the shoulder for a 34-yard touchdown. Southwestern answered with a 53-yard pass from Frederick Hover to David Brandenburg.
HSU went 75 yards on the next drive and Bryson Hammonds capped it with a 1-yard touchdown run. The defense then forced a punt and Hooper hit Matthew Sandoval on a 31-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-7 with 4:30 left in the first quarter.
Southwestern cut the deficit to 21-14 on a Hover 2-yard run but on the first play of the next possession, Hooper hit a streaking Childress for a 64-yard touchdown. The Cowboys then forced another punt and Bryson Hammonds went 67 yards for a touchdown to give the Cowboys a 35-14 lead with 10:07 to play in the first half.
The Pirates cut it to 35-21 1:07 before halftime on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Hover to Markell Henderson.
HSU scored the only touchdown of the third quarter when Hooper hit Kavan Johnson on a 14-yard touchdown pass to make it 42-21. Southwestern scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns and Hooper hit Colton Kent on a 77-yard touchdown.
Ty Hooper completed 15-of-22 passes for 355 yards and five touchdowns without an interception. Bryson Hammonds ran for 203 yards and a pair of scores and Reese Childress had 118 yards on four catches and two touchdowns.
Dedrick Strambler recorded 11 total tackles for the Cowboys.
HSU is now 7-1 overall and 6-1 in ASC play. Southwestern fell to 4-4 overall and 3-4 in league play. The Cowboys travel to Belhaven next week.
