ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team did enough in all three phases of the game to come away with a 47-28 win over Sul Ross State on Saturday afternoon on homecoming at Shelton Stadium.
The Lobos took an early lead on a Julio Azua field goal.
The Cowboys answered with an 18-yard pass from Ty Hooper to freshman Kevi Evans. The Lobos scored on an 11-yard touchdown pass and another short Azua field goal to take a 13-7 lead with 7:14 to play in the first half.
HSU came out in the second half and Hooper hit Reese Childress on a 43-yard touchdown. Williton Greer answered with a 66-yard run up the middle and the two-point try to tie the game failed.
Hooper hit Evans on a 45-yard pass and Zai Zai Smith capped a drive with a 3-yard touchdown run with 3:55 to play in the third quarter.
Childress scored on a 9-yard fade with 2:57 to play and SRSU answered with a 5-yard pass from Fabian Baeza to James Parker. The 2-point PAT was good. Rae Millsap ran back the kickoff on the last play of the game, an 89-yarder.
Hooper was 21-for-29 for 254 yards and five TDs. Bryson Hammonds had 133 yards rushing. Grear had 154 for SRSU.
Childress had 10 catches for 112 yards and two TDs.
HSU is 5-1 on the year and 4-1 in ASC play. SRSU fell to 0-6 overall and 0-5 in league play. HSU will host Texas Lutheran at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
