ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team continued its strong early season play with a 65-14 win over Howard Payne in American Southwest Conference action on Saturday night at Shelton Stadium.
It was the first night conference football game at Shelton Stadium.
The Cowboys took the first drive of the game and went 75 yards in two plays. Ty Hooper hit Kevi Evans on a 68-yard pass and Jaquan Hemphill went 25 yards on the next play and the Cowboys led 7-0. Hemphill made it 14-0 with a 58-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter.
Reese Childress scored on a 15-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to make it 21-0. Howard Payne then scored on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Gage McClanahan to Jordan Bryant.
The Cowboys answered with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Hooper to Childress and the Cowboy defense forced a punt and Childress returned it 60 yards for a touchdown to make it 35-7 with 10:47 to play in the first half. DunTayviun Gross returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown for the final points of the game for the Yellow Jackets.
Hemphill added two more touchdown runs in the first half. He scored on runs of 33 and 14 yards and HSU took a 49-14 lead into halftime.
Hooper put the Cowboys on the board early in the third quarter with a 27-yard touchdown run and Jamie Pogue hit a 35-yard field goal to make it 59-14 on the second play of the fourth quarter. Johnny Morales scored from six yards out with 6:43 to play.
The Cowboys outgained the Yellow Jackets 803-233 in the game. It was the third straight game the opponent has had less than 300 yards of offense.
Hooper, in his first start of the season, went 18-for-24 for 274 yards and a touchdown. Jaquan Hemphill ran for 225 yards and four touchdowns and Evans had three catches for 121 yards.
HSU is now 3-0 on the year and 2-0 in American Southwest Conference action. Howard Payne fell to 1-2 on the year and 1-1 in league play. The Cowboys will host East Texas Baptist on Saturday at 6 p.m.
