Cowboys Surge Past Louisiana College In ASC Opener

 

PINEVILLE, La. – Hardin-Simmons' football team fought off two rain delays and a slow start to roll by Louisiana College 57-21 on Saturday evening in Pineville, La.

The game was delayed about 30 minutes at the start by a lightning but when the teams came out on the field Rae Millsap gave the Cowboys a lead with a 91-yard kickoff return on his first collegiate touch. Jamie Pogue's PAT hit the upright and HSU led 6-0. LC came right back with a 12-play, 83-yard drive and JoJo Robinson scored on a 17-yard pass from Skyler Bonneau.

The Cowboys had a muffed punt and a missed field goal and LC scored on a 29 pass from Bonneau to Lekendrick James and LC looked up midway through the second quarter with a 14-6 lead. Then the Cowboys overcame all the adversity and turned it on the rest of the way outscoring LC, 51-7.

Jamie Pogue hit his first career field goal a 30-yarder with 7:20 to play in the first half. The defense forced a quick punt and then Jaquan Hemphill scored the first of his three touchdowns with a 43-yard run. A quick three-and-out by the defense gave the Cowboys the ball back and they went 83 yards in 13 plays and scored with :03 remaining in the half on a 2-yard touchdown pass to Reese Childress.

Eriq Mitchell intercepted a pass on the opening drive of the second half and Hemphill cashed in from one yard out. Another quick stop by the defense and HSU went 83 yards in 10 plays with Ty Hooper hitting Reese Childress from 15 yards out.

LC fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Hemphill scored from three yards out and the rout was on as the Cowboys led 43-14.

Johnny Morales had a 10-yard touchdown run for the Cowboys and Bryson Hammonds scored on a 20-yard pass from Jeric Smith that included a hurdle of a defender.

Ty Hooper went 11-for-14 for 153 yards in relief of Marc Reed, who was injured. Reed went 9-of-14 for 85 yards. Childress had 10 catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Hemphill ran 17 times for 150 yards and three scores.

The Cowboys rolled up 583 yards of offense and held the Wildcats to 274 yards. After starting the game 4-of-6 on third down, HSU stopped LC on the final 10 third downs of the game.

Eric Mitchell led the team with eight tackles, an interception and 1.5 tackles for loss.

The eighth-ranked Cowboys are 2-0 on the year and 1-0 in ASC action. LC fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in league play. HSU will host Howard Payne at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
