ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team had a pair of standouts named preseason first-team all-Americans by D3football.com.
Jaquan Hemphill, the reigning American Southwest Conference offensive player of the year, was picked to the first team as a running back. The senior from Coleman ran for 1,028 yards and 14 touchdowns and had another 317 yards and three touchdowns receiving, despite playing the second half of the season on a severely injured ankle.
He set an NCAA record with eight touchdowns and added 293 yards rushing in a win at East Texas Baptist. He had four 100-yard efforts in 10 games.
Paving the way for Hemphill is junior offensive tackle Jonathan Castaneda. He was the ASC freshman of the year two years ago and was first-team all-ASC as a sophomore.
HSU returns 14 starters from a year ago and go into the season ranked No. 10 in the D3football.com poll. The team will report on August 15 and start practices on August 16 in preparation for its Sept. 8 opener at Trinity.
