Cowboys Move To 7-1 With Win Over Southwestern

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team moved to 7-1 on the year with a 7-1 win over Southwestern on Homecoming at Shelton Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

After a 13-play, 55-yard drive for Southwestern on its opening possession ended in a missed field goal, HSU went 76 yards in six plays for a touchdown. HSU appeared to be going for a short field goal when Colten Kent, the holder, ran eight yards for a score on fourth down.

Southwestern tied the game in the second quarter when it went on a 16-play, 99-yard drive that took 8:44 of the clock and ended with a Frederick Hoover 2-yard touchdown run.

The game remained 7-7 until the first drive of the third quarter when the Cowboys went 69 yards in seven plays and Landry Turner hit Reese Childress on a 8-yard touchdown pass.

HSU put the game away in the fourth quarter when Turner hit Woody Watson on a 4-yard touchdown pass with 2:23 to play.

Turner was 15-for-22 for 222 yards and two touchdowns. Jaquan Hemphill ran for 90 yards for the Cowboys. Frederick Hoover had 126 yards rushing and was 12-for-24 for 126 yards passing.

Josh White led the Cowboys with 14 tackles and Matthew Hawkins and Eriq Mitchell each had 10 tackles. Hawkins had an interception in the fourth quarter for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys are 7-1 overall and 6-1 in ASC action. HSU will host Belhaven for senior day next Saturday at 1 p.m. Southwestern fell to 4-4 overall and 4-3 in league play.
