RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team advanced to the American Southwest Conference semifinals with a 110-101 win over LeTourneau on Thursday afternoon at the UTD Activity Center in Richardson.
HSU continued its streak of winning at least one game in the conference tournament in 11 appearances into the tournament.
The Cowboys jumped out on the Yellow Jackets in the first half. HSU had a 27-7 run midway through the first half that opened up a 39-17 lead. Jalen Terry had 12 of his 17 points in the run and six different Cowboys scored during the stretch.
LeTourneau narrowed the deficit to 58-45 at halftime and continued to cut into the HSU lead in the second half, but HSU had the answer every time. LeTourneau cut it to 58-52 with seven straight points to start the second half.
HSU pushed it quickly back to 71-59. LeTourneau made another push and cut it to 82-77 with 7:52 but the Cowboys took over down the stretch. Chris Barrett scored nine points in the final 2:22 including a 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down.
Terry led the Cowboys with a career-best 30 points and Barrett also had a career-high with 25 points. Steven Quinn added 18 points, Keenan Holdman scored 16 points, dished out seven assists and hauled in six rebounds.
Caleb Loggins led LeTourneau with 25 points, Nate West had 24 points, eight assists and eight rebounds and Javaughn Dantzler added 20 points.
HSU is now 16-10 on the year and LeTourneau ended its season with a record of 17-9. HSU will play at 5 p.m. on Friday in the semifinal against the winner of the East Texas Baptist-Mary Hardin-Baylor game.
