ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team closed the season with an impressive 89-69 win over crosstown rival McMurry on Saturday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena.
The Cowboys put the clamps down defensively in the first half and cruised to the easy victory.
In a loss to the War Hawks at Hardin-Simmons three weeks ago the Cowboys came out slow and the War Hawks led 26-7. HSU battled back to tie the game late but lost 75-70. There was no repeat this time.
McMurry took an early 8-4 lead but the Cowboys then went on a 34-5 run to blow the game wide open. McMurry was just 5-for-27 shooting in the first half and the Cowboys led 47-15 at halftime.
It was more of the same for the first 10 minutes of the second half. Jalen Terry's layup with 14:36 to play made the score 61-19, the largest deficit of the game.
HSU cleared its bench with over 11 minutes to play and the War Hawks chipped into the deficit with its full court pressure but the game was never in doubt.
Zacc Carter led McMurry with 14 points and Elijah Johnson added 13.
The Cowboys are 15-10 on the year and 10-6 in league play. HSU will play LeTourneau University in the first round of the ASC Tournament on Thursday at UT-Dallas at noon. McMurry fell to 10-15 overall and 7-9 in league play.
