Cowboys Swat Yellow Jackets, 75-61

BROWNWOOD, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team put on the defensive clamps in the final 12 minutes and rallied for a 75-61 win over Howard Payne in American Southwest Conference action at the Brownwood Coliseum.

The two teams played a tight first half and went into halftime tied at 32.

In the second half,  Howard Payne opened up a 53-43 lead with 12:53 to play in the second half. After a timeout, the Cowboys held the Yellow Jackets without a field goal for the next 12:13 seconds before Shadd Cole hit a 3-pointer with :40 to play. The total run for the Cowboys was 20-3.

The run was fueled by the Cowboys' bench as Chris Henderson, Trey Woolridge, Kadon Lewis and Keenan Holdman were on the floor with Joe Hoeup. Holdman had not played up until HPU opened the 10-point lead as he was nursing a minor injury but the Cowboys needed his defensive intensity to close out the game.

Hoeup led a balanced HSU attack with 19 points. Jalen Terry added 11 for the Cowboys. Shadd Cole paced HPU with 16 points.

HSU improved to 14-10 overall and 9-6 in league play. Howard Payne fell to 4-19 overall and 2-12 in league play.

The Cowboys have clinched a spot in the American Southwest Conference tournament and sit one-half game out of first place. HSU will travel to McMurry next Saturday to close the regular season.
