ALPINE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team picked up a crucial road win 83-80 over Sul Ross State on Thursday evening in American Southwest Conference action at the Gallego Center in Alpine.
Both teams started off well and HSU led 14-12 when they hit the Lobos with a 10-0 run to open a 24-12 lead with 9:32 to play in the half.
The Cowboys then had an 11-3 run later in the half, with eight of the points by Joe Hoeup, to open a 42-22 lead with 4:19 to play in the first half. HSU led 46-29 at halftime.
Another 11-1 run in the second half that was capped by a Kadon Lewis 3-pointer, pushed the Cowboy lead to 66-44 with 12:02 to play. HSU still led 78-64 after a Jalen Terry jumper with 3:37 to play but the Lobos chipped away and Jack Kirkpatrick's lay-up cut it to 80-78 with :24 to play.
Hoeup then was fouled and hit both free throws with :18 to play and then he split a pair with 9.4 seconds to play to make it 83-80. Tristan Licon's 3-point attempt to tie rattled out to give the Cowboys the win.
Licon had 22 points, Kilpatrick added 15 and Jola Otubu scored 13 points.
The Cowboys are now 13-10 overall and 8-6 in conference action. Sul Ross State fell to 10-12 overall and 5-8 in league play.
HSU will remain on the road for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday at Howard Payne.
