ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team saw its late rally fall just short in a 103-96 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor in American Southwest Conference action on Senior Day at the Mabee Complex.
The teams played tightly before UMHB had a surge to take a 30-19 lead. HSU answered with a 14-4 run and eventually UMHB led 38-35.
UMHB had an 18-2 run midway through the second half to take a 66-47 lead. The Cru still led 84-64 with 4:55 to play and the Cowboys went on a run.
Hoeup scored 20 points and hit five 3-pointers in the final five minutes as the Cowboys cut the deficit down to 94-90, but the Cru iced the game at the free throw line.
UMHB outshot the Cowboys 32-6 at the free throw line in the game and the Cowboys didn't take their first free throw in the contest until 9:27 remained in the second half. From the field, the Cru shot 20-of-27 in the second half and shot 60.3 percent for the game. HSU shot 55.7 percent in the game.
Brian Long had 27 points for the Cru and Demarius Cress added 21 and Lakendric Hyson added 20 for UMHB.
The Cowboys are now 12-10 overall and 7-6 in the ASC. UMHB improved to 17-5 overall and 8-5 in league play. HSU will hit the road for the final three games of the season, starting on Thursday in Alpine against Sul Ross State.
