ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team held first-place Concordia 23 points under its average in a 76-67 win on Thursday evening in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex.
The Cowboys limited the Tornados to 40.6 shooting and 32.1 percent from 3-point range and Joe Neal, the leading scorer in the ASC West, was held to 12 points on 6-of-16 shooting.
In the first half, the game was a back and forth contest as both teams were playing at a high level. Steven Quinn's shot right before the buzzer gave the Cowboys a 34-31 halftime lead.
Concordia led 46-45 with 11:57 to play but the Cowboys went on an 11-0 run. Jalen Terry hit a 3-pointer at the end of the shot clock, Steven Quinn had four points, Keenan Holdman had two and Neal Chambliss added a jumper.
Joe Hoeup scored 14 of his 20 points in the final 4:25 of the game.
Quinn led the Cowboys with 23 points, Hoeup had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Terry added 12 points and Chambliss had 10.
Robbie Hamilton led the Tornados with 16 points. Concordia fell to 10-11 overall and 8-4 in league play.
The Cowboys are now 12-9 on the year and 7-5 in league play. They are tied with Mary Hardin-Baylor for second one game behind Concordia in the league standings.
HSU will host Mary Hardin-Baylor for Senior Day on Saturday at 3 p.m.
