ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team won a hard-fought game with Sul Ross State, defeating the Lobos 82-72 in American Southwest Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Complex.
The two teams traded the lead 11 times and there were four ties in the first half. Sul Ross used an 11-3 run to take a 42-33 lead with 5:17 to play in the half. However, the Cowboys tightened it up defensively and held the Lobos scoreless the rest of the half and outscored them 12-0 to take a 45-42 lead into halftime.
Sul Ross State led 46-45 early in the second half and then the Cowboys scored the next 11 points. The run at the end of the first half and the start of the second half was a 23-4 spurt which was the difference in the contest.
The Lobos eventually tied the game but never was able to take over the lead in the contest the rest of the way. HSU forced Sul Ross State into 20 turnovers and HSU had a 26-13 lead in points off turnovers. HSU also held the Lobos to 38 percent shooting in the game, including 8-for-30 from 3-point range.
The game had 13 lead changes and five ties.
The typically balanced Cowboys had that look again on Saturday with five players in double figures. Joe Hoeup led the Cowboys with 19 points and he also had seven rebounds. Jalen Terry had 15 points, Neal Chambliss added 14 points, Chris Barrett had 13 points and Trey Woolridge had a career-best 10 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.
Tristen Licon led Sul Ross State with 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Jack Kirkpatrick and B.J. Hollis had 10 points each for the Lobos.
HSU is now 11-8 on the year and 6-4 in league play. The Cowboys are one-half game behind Concordia in the ASC West standings. Sul Ross State, the defending ASC champion, fell to 8-10 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
