LONGVIEW, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team overcame a seven-point deficit as Joe Hoeup hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with :10 to play to give the Cowboys a huge 98-95 road win over American Southwest Conference East Division preseason favorite LeTourneau on Thursday evening at the Solheim Arena.
The game was back-and-forth the entire way and featured 12 ties and 14 lead changes. LeTourneau led 88-86 with 2:34 to play and went on a quick 7-2 run to take a 95-88 lead with :50 to play.
Jalen Terry then hit a 3-pointer for the Cowboys and Keenan Holdman tied up the in-bounds pass and the possession arrow favored the Cowboys. Hoeup was fouled and hit a pair of free throws and then Garrett Beene missed the front end of a one-and-one for LeTourneau with :29 to play.
Terry missed a 3-pointer but Steven Quinn capped a huge night with an offensive rebound to give the Cowboys another possession and Hoeup calmly buried a 3-pointer in the corner to give the Cowboys the lead. HSU was then assessed a technical foul for excessive celebration.
Christian Seidl missed the free throw and Keenan Holdman was fouled and he made both free throws. Seidl's last-second 3-point attempt was off the mark.
The Cowboys took a lead into halftime thanks to a huge half by Quinn. The freshman had 23 points at halftime and finished with a career-best 30 points. Terry and Hoeup were in foul trouble the first half and combined for two points for the Cowboys.
Caleb Loggins led the Yellow Jackets with 25 points and Seidl added 21.
The Cowboys are now 8-6 on the year and 3-2 in conference play. LeTourneau fell to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in league action. HSU will play at East Texas Baptist at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
