POMONA, Calif. – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team closed its road trip to California with a 90-78 loss to Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday afternoon in Pomona, Calif.
The Sagehens took control with a 17-4 run midway through the first half to take a 23-12 lead. A little later in the half, Joe Hoeup then caught fire for the Cowboys and scored 12 of the next 14 points to cut the deficit to 35-34 with 3:40 to play in the half.
Micah Elan then hit three straight 3-pointers for P-P to move the lead back out and the Sagehens eventually led 46-40 at halftime. P-P pushed the lead out with a strong start to the second half and led 58-44, before the Cowboys made a push.
Neal Chambliss and Keenan Holdman combined to score 11 points in a row for the Cowboys and HSU eventually tied the game at 75 on a Jalen Terry lay-up with 4:57 to play. P-P answered with an immediate 11-0 run to take the game.
Hoeup led the Cowboys with 22 points and Holdman added 13, Chris Barrett 12 and Terry 11. Alex Preston led the Sagehens with 24 points and 14 rebounds and Elan had 17 points.
HSU is now 7-6 on the year and Pomona-Pitzer 9-1. The Cowboys will return to Texas and start back into American Southwest Conference play on Thursday at LeTourneau.
