LA VERNE, Calif. – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team shook off the rust of the Christmas break with a strong second half en route to a 101-92 win over the University of La Verne on Friday afternoon in La Varne, Calif.
The Cowboys trailed 57-50 at halftime but locked in in the second half and came away with the road win.
HSU led 37-30 with 8:15 to play in the first half and still lead with 4:17 to play in the half 43-41 but the Leopards outscored the Cowboys 16-7 to close out the half.
In the second half, the Cowboys came out on a 10-2 run to take the lead on a Joe Hoeup 3-pointer. The Cowboys gradually built up the lead the rest of the way.
Hoeup, who was playing in front of family and friends from his home state of California, led the Cowboys with 26 points and he added seven rebounds. Steven Quinn added 17 points and seven rebounds and Neal Chambliss added 13 points and five rebounds. Chris Barrett scored 15 points for the Cowboys.
Trevor Anderson led La Verne with 23 points off the bench, including 20 in the first half. He hit seven 3-pointers in the contest. La Verne hit 11-of-16 3-pointers in the first half but the Cowboys held them to 1-of-8 from behind the arc in the second half.
HSU is now 7-5 on the year and will take on Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at 5 p.m. (CST). La Verne fell to 1-8 on the year.
