SEGUIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team closed the pre-Christmas portion of its schedule with a 75-74 loss at Texas Lutheran on Friday evening at Memorial Gym in Seguin.
Texas Lutheran won the game with a free throw with 0.7 seconds after a foul was called when TLU was pushing the ball ahead 30 feet from the basket after Keenan Holdman had tied the game just two seconds earlier. Nathan Josephs split the free throws for the win.
HSU opened up the game with an 11-4 run but Texas Lutheran responded with a 10-0 run to take a 14-11 lead. The Cowboys then regained the lead at 23-19 after Kadon Lewis' 3-pointer with 9:22 to play in the half. TLU responded with a 13-2 lead to take a 32-24 lead. TLU led 39-29 at halftime.
TLU led 49-38 with 16:08 to play when the Cowboys went on a run and cut the deficit to 51-47 with 11:28 to play on a Lewis steal and lay-up.
The Cowboys took its first lead of the second half with 6:45 to play when Chris Barrett hit a pair of free throws. He had also had a lay-up and a 3-pointer as the Cowboys chipped away at the deficit.
The Bulldogs went back up by four points on a couple of different occasions, but the Cowboys kept coming back. Steven Quinn hit a 3-pointer with :45 to play to cut it to 73-72. Sebastian Andrade split a pair of free throws to make it 74-72 with :34 to play.
Barrett led the Cowboys with 21 points, Holdman added 16 and Jalen Terry 15. Andrade led TLU with 22 points and Harris Jowell had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
HSU is now 6-5 on the year and TLU improved to 7-5. The Cowboys will return to action Dec. 28 in California when it plays La Verne.
