KERRVILLE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team fell to Schreiner, 80-69, on Thursday night at the Stephens Family Arena in Kerrville.
Both teams came out rusty and Schreiner used an 8-1 run to open up a 41-28 lead late in the first half. The Cowboys scored the final five points of the half on a 3-pointer by Joe Hoeup and a tip-in at the buzzer by Justin Lovvorn.
HSU came out with six straight points by Keenan Holdman and eventually tied the game at 45 before Schreiner scored the next nine points and eventually built the lead back to 60-47.
The Cowboys cut the deficit to 67-63 but the Mountaineers pulled away down the stretch. Schreiner had a 20-rebound advantage in the battle of the boards, winning 47-27.
Hoeup and Holdman each had 14 points for the Cowboys and Lovvorn added a career-best 11 points.
Paul Wells led a balanced Mountaineer attack with 18 points.
HSU is now 6-4 on the year and Schreiner improved to 3-6. The Cowboys will close the pre-Christmas portion of its schedule on Friday at 5 p.m. at Texas Lutheran.
