ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team played most of its game with Schreiner without its top two players, but the Cowboys found a way to claw out a 97-84 win in non-conference action at the Mabee Complex on Saturday.
Senior Joe Hoeup missed the entire game with an ankle injury and senior Jalen Terry played only eight minutes before going out with an injury. The two combine to average 30.2 points per game on the season but it didn't slow down the Cowboys.
HSU shot a season-best 58.8 percent from the field and hit 57.1 percent on 12-of-21 from behind the 3-point arc. Schreiner shot 57.7 percent in the game. HSU also hit 25-of-33 free throws, including 9-of-12 in the final two minutes to keep Schreiner from coming back.
The two teams battled back and forth the entire first half and the game was tied at 44-44 when HSU received consecutive 3-pointers from Chris Barrett, Chris Henderson and Steven Quinn to push the lead to 53-46 with :59 to play in the half. HSU led 53-47 at halftime.
Schreiner used a 10-0 run from 14:53 to 12:33 to take its biggest lead of the game at 64-59. Matthew Rindahl had eight of the points in the run.
Rindahl led Schreiner with 26 points and Ellis Jones added 15.
HSU is now 3-2 and will host Louisiana College on Thursday in American Southwest Conference action. Schreiner is 2-4 on the year.
