ABILENE, Texas – Dimitrius Underwood hit a driving lay-up with :13 to propel UT Dallas to a 72-71 over Hardin-Simmons in the American Southwest Conference opener for both teams at the Mabee Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
The two teams battled back and forth, and Joe Hoeup gave the Cowboys a 71-70 lead with :35 to play when he hit a contested 3-pointer. Underwood then drove the ball to the basket and scored and then Hoeup's late 3-pointer rattled out.
The Comets took a 31-22 lead with 2:39 to play in the first half and the Cowboys cut it to 37-31 at halftime.
In the second half, the Cowboys scored the first seven points of the half to take a 38-37 lead. Neither team led by more than five points the rest of the way and the game featured seven ties and 14 lead changes in the second half.
UTD won the game in the paint as it outscored the Cowboys 42-18. The Cowboys tried to counter with its perimeter advantage and hit 11-of-25 from 3-point range.
Hans Burwitz and Underwood each had 22 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cowboys are 1-2 on the year and 0-1 in league play and UTD improved to 3-1. HSU will host Texas Lutheran on Friday at 5 p.m.
