SHREVEPORT, La. – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team fell 84-79 to Centenary in the season opener on Saturday afternoon in Shreveport.
HSU had an early 11-10 lead but Centenary went on an 8-3 run to take a 19-13 advantage that they would not relinquish the rest of the half. The Gents used a 17-6 run to close the half to take a 40-32 halftime lead.
The Cowboys battled back and tied the game at 43 on a Chris Barrett 3-pointer and eventually took a brief 47-46 lead on a Neal Chambliss jumper with 15:33 to play. The game was tied at 54 with 10:43 to play but Centenary used an 8-0 run to take the advantage.
Joe Hoeup's 3-pointer with 3:01 to play cut the deficit to 70-69 but Centenary used a 10-2 run to put the game away.
Hoeup led the Cowboys with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Five other Cowboys hit double figures. Jalen Terry scored 12 points, Chris Barrett added 11 points and Keenan Holdman, Neal Chambliss and Steven Quinn all had 10 points each.
Kile Mingo and Treylan Matthew had 21 points each to pace Centenary.
The Cowboys will play an exhibition game at Texas State on Tuesday.
