ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' senior Caleb Spoon hit a 3-pointer with :32 to play to lift the Cowboys past crosstown rival McMurry, 90-84, on Saturday at the Mabee Complex.
Spoon, the school's all-time leader in 3-pointers closed out his career with a memorable one, leading by one he came off a screen and buried his fifth triple of the game to give HSU a 85-81 lead. The Cowboys closed out the game from there.
HSU used a 12-3 run in the first half to push out to an early 18-10 lead with 13:19 to play in the first half. McMurry chipped away and took the lead on a Luke Stephenson 3-pointer with 8:08 to play in the half. HSU came back and led 47-42 at halftime.
In the second half, it was close throughout and McMurry took an 81-80 lead with a 3-pointer by Dedrick Berry. Keenan Holdman answered with a layup for HSU to make it 82-81 with 1:05 to play. Berry then turned the ball over the next possession and the Cowboys ran a play for Spoon that got him open at the top of the key.
HSU hit five-of six free throws the final :23 to ice the game.
Spoon finished the game with 29 points to lead all scorers. Sophomore point guard Chris Barrett had a triple-double for the Cowboys with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Holdman had 17 points and Joe Hoeup added 16.
Stephenson had 25 points to pace McMurry and Berry scored 22. He had made just 11 3-pointers on the year coming into the contest and he hit 6-of-7 from behind the arc in the game.
Both teams finished the year with a record of 9-16. HSU finished the year 7-10 in league play and McMurry 6-11. HSU was eliminated on the tiebreakers with Howard Payne. The Yellow Jackets won on a buzzer beater over Mary Hardin-Baylor to claim the final playoff spot in the ASC West.
