Spoon Sets HSU’s 3-Point Record As Cowboys Fall To Howard Payne


ABILENE, Texas – Caleb Spoon set the Hardin-Simmons career record for 3-pointers as Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team fell to Howard Payne 97-85 in a key American Southwest Conference game at the Mabee Complex.

Spoon needed five 3-pointers to break the record and he hit six in the first half to pass John Derr for the career record. He finished the game with 28 points and he hit eight 3-pointers. He now has 261 for his career.

Howard Payne opened up a big first-half lead and led 50-34 at halftime and eventually pushed the advantage out to 61-36 with 16:17 to play, but the Cowboys responded. Joe Hoeup scored 20 second-half points and the Cowboys cut the deficit to 85-82 with 1:11 to play on a pair of Keilyn Nance free throws.

HPU closed the game at the foul line by hitting eight-of-nine in the final minute.

Spoon led the Cowboys with 28 points and Hoeup scored 26. Keenan Holdman had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Ryan Chaney scored 10 points.

The Cowboys had few answers for Howard Payne's Khyce Randall as he dropped in 35 points. Timothy Aguero added 15.

HSU is now 8-16 overall and 6-10 in ASC play. Howard Payne improved to 9-14 overall and 5-10 in league play. The teams are battling for the final playoff spot in the ASC West. HSU hosts McMurry next Saturday for senior day.
