Spoon Scores 1,000th Career Point in HSU’s Loss To UMHB

BELTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team made a late run at Mary Hardin-Baylor but eventually fell 105-93 in American Southwest Conference action at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.

UMHB used 52.5 percent shooting in the first half to jump out to a 53-37 lead at halftime. The Cru pushed the lead out to 70-49 with 13:48 to play before the Cowboys started a furious comeback.

HSU chipped the deficit all the way down to 99-93 on a Caleb Spoon 3-pointer with 2:09 to play, but that was as close as they could get as UMHB iced the game at the free throw line down the stretch.

Spoon scored 25 points for the Cowboys and went over the 1,000-point mark for his career. He now has 1,013 career points. He also needs six more 3-pointers to set the HSU career record.

Joe Hoeup scored a career-best 31 points and hauled in 11 rebounds for HSU. Keenan Holdman added 18 points and Chris Barrett had 12 points.

Brian Long led the Cru with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Sam Moore added 23 points off the bench and Lakendric Hyson added 20 points.

HSU is now 8-14 overall and 6-8 in conference play. UMHB improved to 16-6 overall and 9-5 in ASC action. The Cowboys will host ASC West leader Sul Ross State on Thursday at the Mabee Complex.
