Cowboys Blow By Tornados With Strong Second Half


AUSTIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team beat Concordia 97-84 in American Southwest Conference action in Austin on Thursday night at the Concordia Fieldhouse.

Concordia jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes. HSU took a 14-12 lead on a Zane Zbranek 3-pointer with 12:14 to play in the half and never trailed again. HSU pushed the lead out to as many as 10 points and eventually led 43-36 at halftime.

HSU raced out of the halftime locker room and Joe Hoeup opened the half with a lob dunk and Caleb Spoon hit four 3-pointers to push the lead out to 66-45 with 14:54 to play. Concordia was never closer than 13 until the final second of the game.

The Cowboys rebounded from a 19-for-34 effort at the free throw line in a loss to McMurry in its previous game with a 23-for-24 night at the charity stripe.

Spoon finished with 28 points and hit eight 3-pointers in the game. Joe Hoeup finished the game with 24 points in the contest. Charles Johnson led the Tornados with 18 points.

HSU is now 8-13 overall and 6-7 in conference play. Concordia fell to 13-8 overall and 7-6 in ASC play. The Cowboys will play at Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday.
