BROWNWOOD, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team used a strong second half to defeat Howard Payne, 75-64, on Thursday night at the Brownwood Coliseum in American Southwest Conference action.
The Cowboys led most of the first half but it was close throughout and the score was tied seven times and the lead changed hands on six separate occasions. HPU used a late 7-0 run in the first half to take the lead and took a 34-32 lead into the halftime locker room.
HSU's defense came out strong in the second half and Joe Hoeup got going in transition with 12 points in the first seven minutes. Keenan Holdman gave HSU a 56-48 lead with 11:53 to play on a 3-point play in transition.
The Cowboys are now 6-11 overall and 4-5 in conference play. Howard Payne fell to 7-10 overall and 3-6 in conference action.
HSU will travel to Alpine to take on ASC West leader Sul Ross State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
