ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team will open the Matt Brackett era on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. when it travels to Georgetown to play Southwestern in the season opener.
The Cowboys are coming off back-to-back American Southwest Conference titles and a 24-7 team a year ago that went to the Sweet 16. The Cowboys return just three players from a year ago. Brackett will be making his head coaching debut after taking over for the retired Craig Carse in April.
Guards Caleb Spoon and Joe Hoeup both were in the rotation a year ago. Spoon played in all 31 games and started 17 of them. He averaged 11.3 points and hit a school -record 99 3-pointers. Hoeup played in 28 games and started five. Ryan Chaney is the only other returner for the Cowboys.
Southwestern beat the Cowboys a year ago in the season opener with a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Connor Kim. The Pirates were 14-13 last season.
HSU had a solid showing on Tuesday in its exhibition game at Sam Houston State, falling 72-56. Freshman Salomon Smith led the way with 12 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots.
