Cowboys Hold Off Lobos
ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team held off Sul Ross State 84-80 to maintain solo possession of first place of the American Southwest Conference West Division on Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Complex.

The Cowboys got it rolling in the first half and took a 30-16 lead on a Caleb Spoon 4-point play with 8:53 to play in the half. The Lobos then chipped away and Isaiah Tillman's 3-pointer right before halftime cut the HSU lead to 42-36.

Sul Ross State used a 12-0 run midway through the second half to take a 56-49 lead with 12:08 to play. The Cowboys, who were playing without Justin Jones who was injured early in the second half and did not return, answered right back. Christian O'Neal hit a jumper and Spoon, O'Neal and Dixon hit back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Cowboys the lead back at 62-58 with 9:17 to play.

Every time the Lobos were able to inch closer, the Cowboys had an answer and finished the day 22-of-23 at the foul line including 6-of-6 in the final minute to secure the win.

Spoon led the way for the Cowboys with 27 points as he made 8-of-14 from 3-point range. Christian O'Neal had a career-best 25 points and eight assists for the Cowboys. Nathaniel Jack and Dashun Dixon each had 13 points.

Jones scored his 1,000th career point before leaving the contest. 

Caleb Thomasson led the Lobos with 25 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. Brock Anders had 19 points and C.J. Ross added 14 points.

HSU is now 13-4 overall and 7-1 in ASC play. Sul Ross State fell to 9-8 overall and 5-3 in conference play. The Cowboys will host McMurry at 3 p.m. next Saturday in its next action.
