AUSTIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped its first game 4-2 to East Texas Baptist in the American Southwest Conference Tournament on Thursday.
The game was delayed 2:45 in the seventh inning with the Cowboys trailing 4-1. When the game resumed Hayden Day got out of the seventh inning and the Cowboys scored on an RBI single by Tyler Bradshaw and had runners at second and third but a fly out ended the inning.
The Cowboys could not score in the ninth inning to fall into the loser's bracket.
The game was a pitcher's duel early as John Clift and Derrick Findley both worked three scoreless innings. HSU scored in the fourth on a balk. ETBU answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a Brady Faulkner RBI single.
ETBU added an RBI single by Casey Combs in the fifth inning and Ford Spigener had the big hit of the game a two-run triple in the sixth inning to make it 4-1.
Clift went five and a third innings and struck out six while allowing only three earned runs. Justin Adams and Hayden each worked an inning and one-third out of the bullpen and neither allowed a run.
Findley improved to 9-2 on the year. He went the seven innings before the rain delay and allowed just three hits and one run. Alex Acellano worked the eighth allowing an unearned run and Chad Boudreaux worked a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.
Jamie Dominguez had two of the four HSU hits and Landen Barns had three hits for the Tigers.
HSU will play in an elimination game at 11 a.m. Friday, weather permitting. They will play the loser of the Concordia-Sul Ross State that is getting a late start and there is still rain in the area.
HSU is now 18-21 on the year and ETBU improved to 29-12.
