BROWNWOOD, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball fell 5-4 to Howard Payne in the regular-season finale on Sunday in Brownwood.
HPU took the lead with two runs in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded walk and an infield single.
HSU answered right back with three runs in the fifth. Jacob Rains and Cade Johnson had RBI singles and another run scored on an error. HPU took the lead for good in the fifth with two more runs on a Tyler Cavenass single. HPU added another run in the sixth.
HSU scored a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Danny-David Linahan.
With the ASC tournament starting on Thursday and the seeding already determined, the Cowboys split up the pitching staff. John Clift worked three scoreless innings. Jaxon Terrell, who has been injured, saw his first action since March 22 and worked two-third of an inning. Clay Botello, Channing Hickman, Taylor McMackin and Chase Buchannan all pitched for HSU. Botello took the loss.
HPU also used five pitchers.
Johnson, Brett Hudspeth and Linahan had two hits each for HSU. Cavenass had two hits for HPU.
HSU is now 18-20 overall and 12-10 in ASC play. Howard Payne finished the regular-season with a record of 26-14 and 17-4 in ASC action.
The Cowboys will play East Texas Baptist in the first round of the ASC Tournament at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Concordia University in Austin,
