ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team swept a doubleheader against Louisiana College on Friday at Hunter Field winning 6-5 in eight innings and 5-3 in seven innings in a key American Southwest Conference series.
The Cowboys took the first game in eight innings in a game that was scheduled for seven. HSU won it on a bases-loaded wild pitch.
LC responded with four runs. Dane Pederson had a three-run home run and Deauton Delgado followed with another home run to give the Wildcats the lead. HSU tied it in the bottom of the fourth on a Jacob Rains RBI single.
John Paul Tople gave HSU a 5-4 lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly and LC tied the game in the sixth with an Ashton Martin home run.
Hayden Clark went five and two-third innings for the Cowboys allowing five runs. Hayden Day worked one and a third scoreless innings and Taylor McMackin earned the win with an inning of scoreless relief. He is now 3-2 on the year.
Deauton Delgado went four and one-third innings and allowed five runs. Phillip Vidrine allowed one run and took the loss to fall to 4-2.
Johnson and Rains had two hits each for the Cowboys and Delgado had a pair for LC.
The Cowboys received a good pitching effort from starter Brady Roper and Hayden Day closed out the game with a two-inning save to give HSU the sweep. Roper went five innings and allowed three runs to improve to 1-4 on the year.
LC took an early lead on a two-run triple by Dylan Keller in the second inning. HSU responded with four runs in the bottom of the second. John Paul Tople had a sacrifice fly to bring home Tyler Bradshaw who had tripled to lead off the inning. Dylan Sweeney had an RBI double and HSU scored another run on a wild pitch and Hunter Garrison added an RBI single.
LC scored a single run in the sixth on a leadoff home run by Keelyn Johnson to end the night for Roper. Sweeney gave the Cowboys the run back in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single.
Jacob Buchannan worked the first two innings and took the loss for LC. He allowed four runs. Konnor McDermott worked the final four innings for LC.
Pederson had two hits for LC and Rains and Dylan Sweeney had two each for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys are 18-14 on the year and 12-6 in ASC play. LC fell to 24-8 overall and 11-6 in ASC action. The two teams will try to complete the series at 1 p.m. on Saturday, weather permitting. It will also be senior day for the Cowboys.
