Cowboys Sweep McMurry

 

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team swept crosstown rival McMurry with 9-8 and 5-1 wins on Saturday after in American Southwest Conference action at Hunter Field.

Game 1

Tyler Bradshaw hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Cowboys a 9-8 win. Bradshaw needing a hit to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, launched a ball over the right field fence to give him his third home run of the season.

HSU took an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the second inning on seven singles. Cade Johnson and Hunter Garrison had RBI singles and John Tople a two-run single.

McMurry answered with four runs of its own in the top of the third. Matthew Chalk, Blaine McRay and Mike Gonzales all had RBI singles and Justin Kutz an RBI double.

The War Hawks took the lead in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Chalk. HSU responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Tople, a sacrifice fly by Brett Hudspeth and another run scored on an error.

McMurry again had the answer to retake the lead 8-7 on a two-run home by Kutz in the fifth. HSU responded right back with an RBI single by Garrison to tie the game in the fifth.

The game, scheduled for seven innings, remained 8-8 until Bradshaw ended it in the bottom of the eighth. By ASC rule, the second game became a seven-inning game automatically.

HSU had to use its bullpen to get the win. Brady Roper started and went two and two-third innings and allowed four runs, but just one was earned. Clay Botello and John Clift each allowed two-run home runs in their relief outings. Justin Adams worked two scoreless innings and Chase Buchannan worked a scoreless eighth to earn his first collegiate win.

Garrison and Cade Johnson had three hits each for HSU and Chalk had three hits for McMurry.

 

Game 2

Hayden Clark worked into the seventh inning allowing just one unearned run on four hits and improved to 4-2 on the mound for the Cowboys. The junior lefthander gave way to Hayden Day in the seventh and Day closed the game out in a non-save situation.

McMurry scored on a two-out throwing error in the third inning for its only run of the game.

HSU scored four times in the bottom of the third. Garrison had an RBI single, Johnson a two-run double and Tople added an RBI double. The Cowboys added an RBI single by Matthew Hicks in the fifth for an insurance run.

Chris Lewis worked five innings allowing five runs and Justin Franklin worked the sixth for McMurry. Lewis fell to 0-3 on the year.

Johnson had two more hits for the Cowboys and Chalk had two of the five McMurry hits.

HSU, after starting the season 2-7, is now 11-11 overall and 7-5 in American Southwest Conference action. McMurry fell to 7-17 overall and 0-9 in league play. The Cowboys will host Southwestern on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
