Cowboys Take Series From Sul Ross State

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split a doubleheader against Sul Ross State falling 8-3 in the first game and rebounding to take a 13-7 win in the nightcap to take the series two games to one in non-conference action on Saturday at John J. Hunter Field.

Both teams had off week's in the ASC schedule this week and played the series as a non-conference series.

Game 1

Sul Ross State 8, Hardin-Simmons 3

The Cowboys scratched first with a run in the third inning on a Jamie Dominguez RBI groundout. Sul Ross scored twice in the fourth. Tim Johnson and Ryan Acebedo each had RBI singles.

The game turned in the fifth inning on a failed squeeze play by the Lobos that scored two runs. Wesley Moss missed the bunt on a squeeze play and the Cowboys had Jett Hartley hung up off the bag but the throw to third hit the back of Hartley and two runs came in to score. Chris York later added an RBI sacrifice fly.

HSU scored two in the fifth inning on a Dominguez solo home run to lead off the inning and an RBI fielder's choice by Brett Hudspeth.

The Lobos added three more runs in the seventh inning.

Dominguez drove in two runs for the Cowboys. Wesley Moss and Bo Justin Martinez had two hits each for SRSU.

Aaron Marquez earned the win on the mound for the Lobos working five innings and allowing three earned runs. Peyton Marrett worked two perfect innings for the save.

Brady Roper allowed five runs (three earned) in four and one-third innings and fell to 0-4 on the year. John Clift and Chase Buchannan each worked in relief for the Cowboys.

 

Game 2

Hardin-Simmons 13, Sul Ross State 7

The Cowboys came out swinging in the second game and led 12-1 after four innings. Tyler Bradshaw had an RBI single in the first and another run scored on an error. In the second inning Hunter Garrison and Dominguez each had RBI singles. Garrison added a bases loaded walk in the third.

In the fourth inning, HSU scored seven times. Dominguez had a three-run triple, Bradshaw had a home run, Jacob Rains and Garrison added RBI singles and John Paul Tople had an RBI double.

Sul Ross State chipped away with two runs in the fifth, one in the seventh and two more in the eighth to cut it to 12-6. Garrison added an RBI single in the eighth for HSU and the Lobos added a single run in the ninth.  

Garrison had four hits, drove in four runs and scored three times. Dominguez had two hits and drove in four runs. Chris York led the Lobos with three hits.

Damian Aspetia allowed four runs in one and two-third innings and Kole Vedder, Isaac Gallego, Ashton Leach and Drew Dobbins each worked in relief. Aspetia took the loss.

Hayden Clark worked into the eighth inning for the Cowboys and he allowed five runs to earn the win. Taylor McMackin worked the final inning and one-third for HSU.  

Both teams are now 6-9 on the season. HSU will host the University of Dallas at 3 p.m. on Monday.
