RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team beat Texas-Dallas 5-4 to win its American Southwest Conference series in Richardson on Saturday.
Hayden Clark was solid for the Cowboys as he went seven innings to improve to 2-1 on the year. He scattered seven hits, allowed one run and struck out three.
UTD scored a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Burciaga. The Cowboys tied the game in the third inning when Hunter Garrison scored on a wild pitch and throwing error.
Clay Botello came on in the eighth in relief of Hayden Clark for the Cowboys and hit a batter and walked a batter before giving way to Justin Adams. UTD attempted a sac bunt, but the Cowboys tried for the out at third base but the throw was not in time and the bases were loaded with no outs.
Payton Becker then walked with the bases loaded but Adams got a foul out and a double play to get out of the inning.
Weston Hickman gave the Cowboys a 5-2 lead with a two-run triple in the ninth inning. The Cowboys would need the two insurance runs as Aaron Fanning had a two-run single, but Chase Buchannan worked out of the inning for the save.
Hunter Garrison led the Cowboys with three hits. Matt Mikusek, Ryan Burciaga and Peyton Becker each had two hits for UTD.
Orion Drymond took the loss for UTD allowing three runs in six innings. Nick Gambirasi worked three innings and allowed two runs.
The Cowboys are now 4-8 overall but 3-3 in ASC play. UTD fell to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in conference action. HSU returns home next weekend to host Sul Ross State.
