ABILENE, Texas – LeTourneau scored four times in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Hardin-Simmons 10-9 and complete a Sunday sweep after winning the first game 14-9 in American Southwest Conference action at Hunter Field.
The series was slated for Longview this weekend, but was moved to Abilene because of wet conditions. The Cowboys played as the visitor in all three games.
HSU scored a run in the first inning on a Tyler Bradshaw triple, but LeTourneau exploded for three runs in the second inning and eight more in the third inning to break the game open.
HSU cut the deficit to 11-8 with two more runs in the fifth inning on an error and an RBI single by Dylan Sweeney. LeTourneau bounced back with three runs on the fifth. Rains had another RBI triple for the Cowboys in the seventh inning.
Hudspeth led the Cowboys with three hits and Rains had two hits and drove in three runs. Bryce Brueggemeyer had two home runs, drove in three runs and scored three times for LeTourneau.
Brady Roper started for the Cowboys and took the loss allowing seven runs in two and one-third innings. Channing Hickman, Andrew Hernandez, Justin Adams and Chase Buchannan each worked in relief. Kolton Eberlan won the game in relief for LeTourneau.
HSU received a solid start from Hayden Clark, but the bullpen couldn't hold at John Clift and Hayden Day allowed seven runs in two and two-third innings. Day took the loss. Konner Gayle won the game in relief for LeTourneau with three innings of work.
The Cowboys jumped to a 5-0 lead halfway through the game. HSU scored on an error and an RBI groundout by Hunter Garrison in the second inning and added two runs in the third on back-to-back RBI doubles by Danny-David Linahan and Rains. Michael Hicks had a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Hicks had a two-run double for HSU in the sixth inning.
Brandon Ramirez had a solo home run in the fifth and the Yellow Jackets scored two more runs in the sixth. LeTourneau inched closer in the seventh on a three-run home run by Jacob Jones.
HSU made it 8-6 in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Linahan and another run in the ninth on a solo home run by Sweeney.
Then LeTourneau performed the ninth inning magic. Ramirez led off with a single and then after a groundout Jones singled to right and Mahoney followed with a three-run home run to tie the game. Weston McKinley then drew a two-out walk and Josh Raies hit a double off the left center field fence and McKinley raced home for the win.
HSU left 18 runners on in the game as LeTourneau walked 12 batters and hit four more.
Mahoney had three hits and drove in four and Jacob Jones had two hits and drove in three for LeTourneau. Hicks had two hits and drove in three runs.
HSU fell to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in league play and LeTourneau improved to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Cowboys play at Texas-Dallas next weekend.
