SEGUIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped a doubleheader on Saturday to No. 3 Texas Lutheran at Katt-Isbell Field in Seguin, falling 7-4 and 7-1.
John Paul Tople gave the Cowboys a 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single to right. TLU took the lead in the second with four runs. Cameron Wilson had an RBI triple two runs scored on a two-base throwing error and Nick Gardoni added an RBI single.
Matt Lillard added a solo home run in the fourth for the Cowboys. TLU pushed the lead to 7-2 with a single run in the fourth on a Gardoni sac fly and solo home runs by Tyler Cauley and Dalton Kinder.
Lillard had an RBI single in the seventh and Weston Hickman had an RBI single to shortstop.
Tople, Dominguez and Lillard had two hits each for the Cowboys. Dalton Kinder paced the Bulldogs with three hits.
Nathan Malinovsky earned the win with four innings of two-run ball. Drew Waller worked the final three innings for a save.
Austin Colon put TLU up 1-0 in the third inning with an RBI single and Hunter Garrison tied the game for the Cowboys in the fourth inning with an RBI single.
TLU added two runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Austin Colon had three hits for TLU and six different Cowboys had one hit each.
Taylor McMackin started and worked two innings allowing a run. Brady Roper worked three and one-third innings and took the loss allowing four runs. Hayden Day, John Clift and Clay Botello also worked in relief.
Riley Backs started for TLU and worked three innings. Chase Cutler, Matthew Hickey, Logan Fisher and Joe Burch worked in relief. Hickey improved to 1-0 with the win.
The Cowboys are now 1-5 on the year and TLU improved to 6-0. HSU will open American Southwest Conference play next weekend at LeTourneau.
