ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped its season opener 4-3 to Hendrix College on Friday afternoon at a chilly AirHogs Stadium in Grand Prairie.
Hendrix scored a run in the first inning on a bases-loaded fielder's choice. The Cowboys tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth on a Tyler Bradshaw RBI single.
Andrei Stowyanow had an RBI single in the fifth and he came around to score on an error.
Cade Johnson had an RBI triple for the Cowboys in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 3-2. Jorge Leon had an RBI single in the ninth for Hendrix.
The Cowboys scored on an error in the ninth inning and had the tying run at second when the game ended.
Jaxon Terrell was solid in his Cowboy debut on the mound. He went six-plus innings and allowed just five hits and three runs (one earned) and struck out 11. He took the loss. John Clift and Brady Roper worked out of the Cowboy bullpen.
Jack Hodgins (1-0) earned the win allowing two runs on five hits in five and one-third innings. Evan Orren worked two and two-third innings and Taylor Barker worked the final inning for the save.
Buckner and Bradshaw each had two hits for the Cowboys. Jorge Leon and Ford Sherrington had two hits each to pace Hendrix.
The Cowboys will play Linfield at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
