ALPINE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team received a great start from Chandler Carter, played excellent defense and came up with timely hits in a 9-2 win over Sul Ross State in the American Southwest Conference Red Bracket Tournament on Friday night in Alpine.
Carter went the distance for the Cowboys as he scattered nine hits and limited the Lobos to a pair of runs. He improved to 5-7 on the year.
Sul Ross State scored first on an RBI double by Ryan Almager in the bottom of the first. The game remained 1-0 until the fourth inning when the Cowboys took the lead for good.
Taylor Cooling had a diving catch and started a double play in the bottom of the fourth inning then came up to bat in the top of the fifth and belted a solo home run to make it 3-1. Almager hit a home run for Sul Ross State in the sixth inning to narrow the deficit to 3-2.
HSU busted the game open in the seventh with six runs. John Tople had an RBI single. Cody Berryman followed with an RBI double and Perez had an infield RBI single. After Cody Remore was lifted Bradshaw added an RBI double, the Cowboys picked up a run on a wild pitch and an error.
The Cowboys turned four double plays in the game and threw a pair of runners out from the outfield.
Every Cowboy starter had at least one hit and Berryman led the way with three hits in the game. Almager had two hits and drove in both runs for Sul Ross State.
HSU is now 16-25 on the year and the Lobos fell to 23-18. The Cowboys will play UT Dallas at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
