ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped the first game of its American Southwest Conference series at crosstown rival McMurry, 5-1, on Friday night at Driggers Field.
The Cowboys could not solve McMurry starter Rody Johnson, who tossed a complete-game six-hitter. The lefty improved to 3-1 on the year allowing only one run.
Tyler Jenkins opened the scoring for the War Hawks with a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning. Noah Clarkson added a run in the fifth inning on a wild pitch and Chris Baker and Nick Hammel had RBI singles in the fifth inning to make it 5-0.
The Cowboys scored a run in the seventh inning on an RBI groundout by John Tople.
Ty Engelhardt started for the Cowboys and he allowed five runs in four and two-third innings to take the loss. John Clift worked two and one-third innings of scoreless relief and Chase Buchannan worked a scoreless eighth inning.
Baker, Jenkins and Jordan Speck each had two hits for McMurry and six different Cowboys had one hit each.
HSU is now 13-25 on the year and 10-12 in conference play. McMurry improved to 13-23 overall and 7-15 in ASC action. The teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
