ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team held off Howard Payne, 9-8, in non-conference action at Hunter Field on Tuesday evening.
The Cowboys scored all nine runs in the middle three innings and it was enough to hold off the Jackets. The game featured 341 pitches and the teams combined for 18 walks.
Smith had a squeeze bunt and Lunceford an RBI single to give HPU a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. HSU responded with four runs. Bradshaw had an RBI double and Garrett Bucker and Hunter Garrison had RBI singles in the inning and Jamie Dominguez added an RBI fielder's choice.
HPU came back for three runs in the fifth with RBI singles by Hunter Bazan and Jacob Salazar and a Smith RBI single. HSU scored a single run in the fifth on a Cody Berryman double.
HPU scored a run in the sixth and HSU took advantage of five HPU errors in the sixth inning for four runs. Elijah Perez had the only RBI of the inning. HPU scored single runs in the eighth in ninth before the Cowboys closed it out.
Hayden Day worked the final two and one-third innings for his fifth save. Hayden Clark worked four innings to start the game and allowed two unearned runs. Taylor McMackin, Brady Roper and Eric Denby also worked out of the bullpen. Denby earned the win with one inning of scoreless relief.
Chandler Clark tossed three scoreless innings for HPU before the bullpen took over and Shawn Brody, Wesley Smith, Preston Newman and Kyle Purdes all worked.
HSU is now 10-17 on the year and Howard Payne is 15-11. HSU will open a series with top-ranked Trinity on Friday at 7 p.m.
