Cowboys Split At Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader at Sul Ross State, losing 4-1 in the first game before run-ruling the Lobos 15-3 in the nightcap at Kokernot Field in Alpine.

Game 1

Taylor Cooling gave the Cowboys a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single. The Lobos tied the game with a Jonathan Bigley RBI single in the first. Ryan Acebedo had an RBI single in the second inning for the Lobos.

The game remained 2-1 until the fifth inning when the Lobos received back-to-back sacrifice flies from Monty Maley and Guillermo Loera.

Andrew Marques went four and two-third innings and allowed just one run on four hits to improve to 3-1 on the year. Sam Russell worked the final two and one-third innings for his second save. Jonathan Bigley and Wesley Moss had two hits each for the Lobos.

Six different Cowboys had one hit each. Taylor Cooling went the distance and fell to 1-2 on the year. He allowed four runs.

Game 2

The Cowboy bats exploded in game two pounding out 17 hits and 15 runs.

HSU scored on a wild pitch and an error in the first inning to make it 2-0 and Sul Ross received a two-run single from Wesley Moss in the second inning to tie the game.

Garrett Buckner had an RBI groundout and Jamie Dominguez an RBI double in the fourth to make it 4-2. Acebedo got one of the runs back in the fourth with an RBI single.

Cooling had an RBI single, Buckner an RBI double and another run scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning and in the seventh inning HSU produced eight runs. Buckner, Dominguez, Cooling and John Tople had RBI singles, Cody Berryman had an RBI fielder's choice and Tyler Bradshaw added a three-run double.

Dominguez had four hits for the Cowboys and Dylan Sweeney and Cooling added three hits. Moss led the Lobos with two hits.

Chandler Carter went the distance for the Cowboys to improve to 3-5 on the year. He allowed just three runs on five hits. Justin Haros took the loss for the Lobos.

HSU is 9-17 on the year and 7-8 in ASC play. Sul Ross State is now 17-11 and 11-4 in league action. HSU will host Howard Payne on Tuesday.
