ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons dropped a pair of games to Division II Tarleton State, 11-2 and 6-3 in non-conference action at Hunter Field on Saturday.
Ruben Rodriguez had a sacrifice fly in the first inning to give Tarleton a 1-0 lead. HSU tied the game in the second inning on a John Tople solo home run. Shortly after that, the game was delayed 50 minutes by lightning.
Tarleton came back and scored a run in the third on a bases loaded double play and then busted the game open with four runs in the third inning. Blake Adams had the big blow a three-run home run.
Hunter Garrison hit his first career home run in the fifth inning and then Tarleton added four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh inning.
Taylor Cooling got the start for the Cowboys and he allowed six runs on nine hits in three and one-third innings. Garrett Buckner, Channing Hickman and Brock Bourland all worked in relief for the Cowboys.
Jamie Dominguez had two of the four hits for HSU.
Nathan Hickey worked six innings of four-hit, two-run ball for the Texans to improve to 4-1. Adams had three hits and drove in four runs for Tarleton.
HSU took a 1-0 lead in the second game in the second inning on a Tyler Bradshaw RBI single. Tarleton answered in the top of the third with three runs. Dylan Lemons and Tyler Fowler had RBI singles and Luke Morton had a sacrifice fly.
HSU tied the game in the fourth inning with a pair of runs. Bradshaw scored on a three-base throwing error and Dominguez had an RBI groundout.
Tarleton came back in the top of the fifth inning, Tyler Fowler had an RBI single and Luis Rivas added an RBI fielder's choice to make it 5-3. Luke Morton added an opposite-field home run in the top of the seventh.
Colby Fowler went three innings for Tarleton allowing three hits and one run. Conner Fletcher (2-0) worked six innings of relief for the win allowing two hits and one earned run. Fowler had three hits for Tarleton.
Chandler Carter (2-4) started for the Cowboys he allowed five runs on five hits. Eric Denby allowed just one run in three innings of work and struck out four. Hayden Day worked the final two innings. Berryman had two of the five HSU hits.
The Cowboys are now 7-13 on the year and Tarleton improved to 15-9. HSU will return to action Friday when it hosts Concordia in a big American Southwest Conference series.
