Cowboys Downed By Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped a 7-3 non-conference game at Howard Payne on Tuesday at Don Shepard Park in Brownwood.

HSU took an early lead with three runs in the third inning. Taylor Cooling had an RBI double, John Tople a sacrifice fly and Cody Berryman an RBI double.

Cooling's double was the 49th of his career and he is now tied with Taylor Berlin for the HSU career lead.

Howard Payne tied the game in the fourth with three runs. Cliff Lunceford had an RBI single, a run scored on an error and John Killough had a sacrifice fly.

HPU won the game with four runs in the seventh. Benjamin Lewis had a two-run single, Blake Laney had an RBI single and another run scored on an error.

Cooling and Hunter Garrison each had two hits for the Cowboys. Lunceford and Lewis had two hits each for HPU.

Both teams used five pitchers. Brady Roper started for the Cowboys and Jordan Young, Taylor McMackin, Hayden Clark and Cooling threw for the Cowboys. McMackin took the loss for the Cowboys to fall to 1-5.

Chandler Clark started for the Yellow Jackets, Wesley Smith earned the win in relief and Evan Rodriguez picked up the save.

The Cowboys are now 7-10 on the year and Howard Payne improved to 10-4. HSU will host Tarleton State on Friday for a 6 p.m. game.
