ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team rallied for a 10-8 win over Schreiner on Tuesday afternoon at Hunter Field.
Sam Pistrui led the game off with a home run for Schreiner and the Cowboys responded in the bottom of the first when Dominguez doubled and later came around to score on a Cooling RBI groundout. HSU took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the second. Dominguez had a two-run double and Johnson had an RBI double.
Schreiner scored five times in the third inning and added a run in the fourth to take a 7-4 lead. HSU then exploded for five runs on six hits in the fifth to take a 9-7 lead. Cooling and Elijah Perez had RBI singles and Taylor Bradshaw had a two-run single and Garrett Buckner walked with the bases loaded in the inning.
Schreiner scored a run in the seventh on a Reece Hohertz sacrifice fly and the Cowboys added a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Cooling.
Hohertz, Austin Contreras, Josh Gilliam and Jeffrey Williams all had three hits. Schreiner had 15 hits on the day and left 16 runners on base in the contest.
Rey Garza took the loss for Schreiner as he allowed five runs in one-third of an inning.
Hayden Clark started for the Cowboys and went two and one-third innings. Andrew Hernandez and Channing Hickman both worked and then freshman Jesse Martin went three and two-third innings and allowed just on one run to earn the win. Hayden Day worked the final two innings for his third save.
The Cowboys are now 5-8 on the year and Schreiner fell to 7-11. HSU will host Texas-Tyler in a three-game set this weekend at Hunter Field.
