MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped its American Southwest Conference opener, 4-2, at East Texas Baptist on Sunday evening at Woods Field in Marshall.
All of the scoring came in the early going. Seth Mikeska had a two-run home run for the Tigers in the bottom of the first inning.
HSU tied the game in the top of the third on a two-run double by Taylor Cooling. Casey Combs gave the Tigers the lead back in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI triple and Zach Gartner drove home Combs with a sacrifice fly.
After that, the pitching staffs took over. Ty Engelhardt went seven innings for the Cowboys and took the loss to fall to 1-2. He allowed four runs on six hits. Eric Denby worked a scoreless eighth for the Cowboys.
Blake Corbin earned the win with six innings of work. He allowed two runs on four hits. Chad Boudreaux worked three hitless, scoreless innings for the save.
Combs and Drew Large had two hits each for the Tigers and four different Cowboys had hits.
The Cowboys are now 1-6 on the year and 0-1 in ASC play. ETBU improved to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The two teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Monday.
