GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Senior righthander Ty Engelhardt tossed a three-hit shutout as Hardin-Simmons won its baseball season opener 9-0 over Hendrix College on Friday afternoon in the Jackie Moore/Rusty Greer Classic at AirHogs Stadium in Grand Prairie.
Engelhardt allowed just three singles and did not allow a runner past second base and struck out five batters in the win.
HSU was the visiting team and wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Jamie Dominguez singled through the left side of the infield on the first pitch of the game, stole second base and scored on a Hunter Garrison double.
Garrett Buckner gave HSU a 2-0 lead with an RBI single in the fourth. HSU exploded in the sixth for four runs on four hits. Tyler Bradshaw and Elijah Perez had back-to-back RBI singles and Dominguez had a sacrifice fly. Taylor Cooling added an RBI fielder's choice.
Bradshaw added an RBI single in the seventh, Dylan Sweeney had an RBI single in the eighth and Dominguez an RBI groundout in the ninth.
All 10 players that batted for the Cowboys in the game had at least one hit. Bradshaw led the way with three hits and he also drove in two runss
Taylor Barker took the loss for Hendrix allowing 10 hits and six runs in five-plus innings of work. Hayden Seay and Aaron Little worked in relief.
The Cowboys will play Willamette at 6 p.m. on Saturday. HSU will be hosting an alumni/recruiting event on Saturday evening at AirHogs Stadium.
