Johnston Pitches Cowboys By Howard Payne
RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team staved off elimination with a 9-7 win over Howard Payne in the American Southwest Conference Baseball Red Bracket Tournament at UTD on Saturday.

The Cowboys rallied from an early hole. Howard Payne scored four times in the first inning when HSU had defenders slip three times when fielding ground balls. One of them turned into a hit, one a fielder's choice and one error. David Groves had a two-run double in the inning as well.

HSU started to chip away with a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Colton Parker. HPU scored a run in the top of the second on a Brett Quackenbush RBI single. The Cowboys came back with a Jace Langen RBI single to make it 5-2 after two innings.

The Cowboys scored twice in the third on an RBI single by Parker and a sacrifice fly by Dylan Sweeney. HPU added two runs in the fifth on a two-out two-run double by Noah Payne.

HSU tied the game in the bottom of the inning with three runs. Cody Berryman had an RBI single, Parker an RBI double and Parker eventually scored on a wild pitch.

In the sixth the Cowboys took the lead on an RBI double by Berryman down the line at third and Langen added an RBI single in the seventh to make it 9-7.

Garrett Johnston (6-3) went the distance for the Cowboys, scattering 12 hits and allowing five earned runs. It was the first complete-game win for the Cowboys on the year by an HSU pitcher. Wesley Smith (1-1) took the loss in relief of Matthew Parks.

Parker led the Cowboys with three hits and Zack de Luna, Berryman, Anthony Beasley and Langen added two hits each. Five different HPU hitters had two hits.

HSU is 20-22 and HPU closes its season at 18-22. HSU will play again on Saturday at approximately 4:30 against the loser of East Texas Baptist and UT-Dallas.
