Cowboys Drop Series Opener To Howard Payne
ABILENE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped its American Southwest Conference series opener with Howard Payne, 5-1, on Friday night at Hunter Field.

Howard Payne scored two runs in the third on a two-run single by Brett Quackenbush to take a 2-0 lead. HSU responded with its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Zack de Luna.

Howard Payne added two runs in the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice by Ben Lewis and a Kyle Winstead RBI single. HPU added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI double by Lewis.

Jeremy Hallmark (1-1) started for the Cowboys and allowed four runs on four hits and five walks in four plus innings of work to take the loss. He struck out four batters. Kyle Barnett was solid in relief as he worked four and two-third innings and allowed just one run on five hits. Taylor Cooling got the final out for the Cowboys.

Matthew Parks shut the Cowboys down, scattering nine hits and allowing one run over seven innings to improve to 3-1 on the year. Xavier Haines worked the eighth and allowed a leadoff walk in the ninth before Zach Moseley came on to close it out with a scoreless ninth.

Taylor Cooling, Gunny Evans and Cade Johnson had two hits each for the Cowboys. Michael Nowak and Brett Quackenbush had two hits each for the Yellow Jackets.

The Cowboys are now 7-11 on the year and 2-3 in league play. Howard Payne improved to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in conference action. The teams will conclude the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
